Spain suffered this Wednesday to defeat a 2-1 Canada which gave him a match in the round of 16 match U-20 Women’s World Cup and advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Sonia Bermúdez’s team owned the ball and the chances, but they consistently failed to resolve against the Canadian goal defended by Noelle Henning.
A shot that hit the left corner in the 14th minute by Silvia Lloris revealed the Spaniards’ interest in winning the match. Júlia Bartel, Olaya Rodríguez and Maite Zubieta also tried but they failed or the Canadian goalkeeper was able to calm the danger.
In the second half, Canadians Amanda Allen with Annabelle Chukwu looked to surprise and Canada opened the scoring at 63 on a rebound play where Florianne Jourde identified the center. Two minutes later and fueled by pride, La Roja equalized thanks to a goal by Jone Amezaga, who grabbed a rebound in the small area, restoring order and dominance to La Roja.
And in the 81st minute, and after a great save by the Canadian goalkeeper, came the winning goal and the silence of the Spanish team with Silvia Lloris. La Roja now await their quarterfinal opponent, which will emerge from the winner of the match between Japan and Nigeria this Thursday.
