World number one Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the China Open for personal reasons, the five-time Grand Slam champion announced on Friday.
The 23-year-old Pole won this WTA 1000 in 2023 after defeating Russian Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets in the final
Swiatek withdrew from the WTA in Canada and the WTA in South Korea due to fatigue after winning Roland Garros in June and a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics before losing to American Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
“Due to personal matters, I have been forced to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing,” Swiatek said in a statement. “I’m very sorry as I had a great time playing and winning this tournament last year and I really wanted to be there again. I know the fans will experience great tennis there and I’m sorry I won’t be able to be a part of it at this time.” , he concluded.
The WTA 1000 tournament will be held from September 25 to October 6.
