Manassero Festival (63), leader with McIlroy and Horschel three strokes clear of Wentworth

The Italian Matteo Manassero This Saturday he delivered an impressive card of 63 strokes (-9 for a -18 total) to move into the lead of BMW PGA Championshipa DP World Tour golf tournament to be played through this Sunday at Wentworth Club from Virginia Water (United Kingdom) and already won in 2013.

Manassero, 31 years old and winner of five titles on the continental circuit, will face the final day this Sunday, in search of a sixth second in 2024-, three shots ahead of world number 3, the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroyand the American Billy Horschelwhich shares second place.

Four behind the Englishman Matthew Baldwin, who this Saturday surrendered the lead; and five, the French Antoine Rozner.

Matteo Manassero starred for a full third day. In his exhibition, the player from Negrar signed seven birdies and an eagle and not a bogey to put himself in first place.

Italian is experiencing a period of renaissance. On March 10, he rediscovered his success almost eleven years after the last, by winning the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa. He has not won on a major European circuit since winning the BMW PGA Championship on May 26, 2013.

Since that victory, the Italian has not lifted the trophy again on the DP World Tour, although he has done so once on the Asian circuit (2020) and twice on the Challenge (2023) to regain his card on the circuit after a five year absence.

In 2010, the Italian became the youngest winner on the DP World Tour when he won at the age of 17 years and 188 days at the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar 2010. A precocity record he still holds and predicted a legendary career. However, since winning Wentworth in 2023, wins have denied Manassero.

Rory McIlroy, who came close to winning the Irish Open last week, is still in contention after completing the third round with a 66 (6 under), with an eagle and four birdies.

Among the Spaniards, the best was Ángel Hidalgo from Marbella with -6 overall. Adrián Otaegui from San Sebastián is with -5, Jorge Campillo from Cáceres with -4, Alejandro del Rey from Madrid and Adri Arnaus from Barcelona with -2, Nacho Elvira from Cantabria with par and Rafa Cabreba-Bello from Gran Canaria, with +1 .
