Ernesto Valverde also appears on stage in Athletic’s election campaign. The Gasteiz coach, who has not trained since he was removed from Barça, appears as an alternative to the Atletico men’s first team bench for the candidacies of Jon Uriarte and Ricardo Barkala. The first of them will announce his sports project today, although from his working group they assured in the afternoon that they will not make the name of their coach official until Wednesday.
Valverde has already coached Athletic in two different stages. The first of them, after going through the lower Bilbao club categories and becoming second to Txetxu Rojo, was in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Later, with Urrutia as president, he repeated his experience at the Bilbao club from the 2013-14 to 2016-17 campaign. After his removal from the rojiblanco team, Txingurri signed as coach of Barça, a club where he remained from the 2017-18 season until 2019-20, although he was dismissed mid-campaign.
Valverde’s name appears on the rojiblanco electoral horizon the same day Iñaki Arechabaleta, Athletic’s third candidate for the presidency, officially signed Bielsa as coach for the next two seasons if he is elected to the polls.
