Union Berlin football club will double the capacity of its stadium to 40,000 spectators through financing provided by its partners, as the team did in 2011, celebrating its sixth straight season in the first division.
According to the Berlin group, President Dirk Zingler proposed to the Members’ Assembly to expand the An der Alten Försterei stadium to instead of 22,000 it can accommodate around 40,000 fansas the number of members has exceeded 67,000.
The shares, worth about 500 euroswill be exclusive to members, who can purchase a maximum of ten per head.
“Our stadium must always belong to the people who matter most to it, the members of 1. FC Union Berlin and their families, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” Zingler declared. according to the statement.
The goal is that the club will not lose the essence of the East Berlin neighborhood or its landmarks, besides devoting 80% of the stands, the maximum allowed in the competition, to standing spectators.
In 2011, the Union allowed its partners to acquire the stadium to finance its renovation, in a campaign under the slogan ‘We sell our soul but not to anyone.’
