David Ferrer is since Tuesday the new Davis Cup tournament director of the Rakuten Finalsso replaced Albert Costa, who has held the position since 2019.
“I was thrilled to join the project. Davis is a unique competition. As a player, this is one of the great tournaments you want to play because of its meaning. You compete as a team, you defend the colors of your country, you spend a week with your teammates and the atmosphere at the stands is incredible ”explains the former number 3 in the world, who is quite who knows the competition after playing 20 qualifying rounds and lift the salad bowl three times.
With Ferrer, Pato Clavet will be another year away. The man from Madrid rejoined Kosmos as deputy director of the tournament to support the competition department. 16 teams will participate this year in the group stage to be held from September 13 to 18 in four venues, Bologna, Glasgow, Hamburg and Valencia.
The top two teams from each area will automatically qualify for the grand final in Malaga in November. “2022 will be a big challenge again. The new format that started in 2019 is changed every year with the aim of improving and adapt to the needs of players, fans and sponsors. In my experience, my main goal has been to help make this edition of the Davis Cup a success ”, Ferrer added.
The 16 countries participating in the group stage are Germany, Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, France, England, Italy, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, United States.
