Matt McCarty is 18 holes away from getting the first victory of his PGA Tour career, after posting a card Saturday of 64 strokes (-7) that puts him in the lead after three rounds at the Black Desert Championship in Ivins, Utah.
McCarty, 26, had seven birdies, one eagle and two bogeys. He did most of his damage between holes 4-8, where he followed up with three straight birdies with his eagle and another birdie.
At 19 strokes under par and 194 strokes into the tournament, McCarty is two strokes ahead of Joe Highsmith (62 on Saturday), Kevin Streelman (63), Harris English (66) and Germany’s Stephan Jaeger (68).tied for second place. Highsmith’s 62 marked the lowest round of the day.
Englishman Harry Hall shot a 7-under 64 on Saturday and is sixth, four strokes off the lead.
Kurt Kitayama and Chad Ramey moved up 18 spots in the standings with 64 strokes each. They are now T7 with Beau Hossler (66).
