Changes announced to the classification system for the 2025 MotoGP World Championship

Date:

The Grand Prix Commission has decided that the Moto2 and Moto3 categories will have two free practice sessions that do not count towards access to Q2 and a Friday afternoon practice session that will decide the participants in Q2, as it happens that in the MotoGP category and which. will be effective through the 2025 season.

The aforementioned Commission, consisting of Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, President), Paul Duparc (FIM), Hervé Poncharal (IRTA) and Biense Bierma (MSMA), decided at its meetings in September the new classification system for Moto2 and Moto3, in addition to ratifying another series of agreements.

Thus, the Commission recognized that “after the success of the new format in the MotoGP category, which provides a balance between entering Q2 (second classification) and the time on the track for the teams and riders to work on the point of implementation , the structure of the Moto2 and Moto3 sessions will change to establish coherence in all Grand Prix categories, which will now have two Free Practice sessions that do not count towards access to Q2 and a Training session on Friday morning that will decide the participants Q2”.

In addition, a new method is also adopted in the case of rain at the beginning of the formation, which will correspond to that of MotoGP to create coherence in all categories, so in the event of rain on the grid, the bikes will be pushed to the ‘pit lane’ to make adjustments.

In other agreements, chassis and engine prices are also limited. Moto3 highlighted that “after a fixed period of ten years, the price limit for Moto3 chassis and engines will increase slightly to better balance the cost increases currently borne solely by the manufacturers.”

In addition, following the approval of a previous request from a manufacturer to improve its Moto3 engine, the resulting freeze on the specifications of all performance components (engine and chassis) for the mechanics of the Moto3 category is extended until the end of 2026.

And, for Moto2 concerned, the allocation of private reviews for manufacturers in this category has been extended from seven to nine days.
