Yesterday afternoon, the Spanish Football Federation denounced the racist insults made by the forward of the U19 team and player of Athletic Club, Elijah Giftwas received from a Romanian player in the match between Spain and Romania (1-1), within the tournament to be held in Budapest.
These insults also caused a small disturbance at the end of the match: the Spanish international player of the Basque team confronted the Romanian player who called him “fucking black man”. Now we need to know what the disciplinary consequences of this are both for the footballer in question and for the Romanian Federation itself.
In accordance with the provisions of UEFA’s own regulations in its article 14, specifically on racism or other discriminatory behavior, the Romanian player is exposed to an exemplary penalty that can reach ten games: “Any person who insults the human dignity of a person or a group of people for any reason, including skin color, race, religion, ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation, will incur suspension from at least in ten matches or a specified period of time, or any other appropriate penalty“.
The rule itself also includes sanctions for the association, in this case the Romanian Federation, to which it belongs: “The member association or club responsible will be subject to at least a partial closure of the stadium.” But in addition, as the article itself states, “If the circumstances of the case require, the competent disciplinary body may impose additional disciplinary action by the member association or the responsible club, such as playing one or more matches behind closed doors, closing the stadium, forfeiting a match, deducting points and/or disqualification from the competition.“.
And even the regulations do not rule out that all the proposals contained therein may “combine with specific directives aimed at dealing with such behavior“. Since the RFEF has a complaint, it cannot be denied that an extraordinary procedure will now be opened before the final penalty is determined.
