English coach Gareth Southgate has received the support of his Federation after the disastrous start of ‘pross’ in the Nations League. Under the group, they received historic defeats to Hungary (1-0 and 0-4) and two 1-1 defeats against Italy and Germany last June.
Some disappointing results leaving England with plenty of options to finish last in the group with two days left to play in September and relegation to League B of the Nations League.
Five months before the World Cup kicks off in Qatar, Southgate saw its reputation tarnished by an adoring public after leading England to the 2021 European Championship final and fourth place in the 2018 World Cup.
Confidence before the World Cup
“We have confidence in Gareth and I think it’s important. It’s particularly important as we get closer to the most important of all tournaments,” said Debbie Hewitt, FA president since January.
Hewitt praised Southagte, saying “resilience and a sense of responsibility are the two qualities I most admire in him. He never slumps, he never sighs … That’s what you expect from an English manager.”
“It’s refreshing to work with someone like that, because their willingness to learn (from bad experiences) is pretty noticeable and pretty unusual, regardless of their background,” Hewitt continues based on his experience in the world of business.
glowing praise
He also urged not to forget the past too quickly. “Gareth, because of his results, was England’s most successful coach in 55 years,” he recalled in reference to the World Cup won in 1966, the only title so far achieved by ‘pross’.
“What people don’t really see is Gareth’s camps and the culture he created. Before Gareth was manager of England, there was no pride in wearing a shirt. There were rivalries between clubs, as we read. players they don’t get along with, ”Hewitt recalled. “It changed all of that more than anything you can imagine and I’ve witnessed it personally,” the FA president concluded.
