A rule that could change the Premier League is being trialled

Date:

Do you have Premier League an answer to the eternal time-wasting of goalkeepers? Probably. In fact, it is already being reviewed in lower categories. And the new rule will change football if it is finally implemented. Finally, there will be an end to the controversial time-wasting of goalkeepers, who will forever play with the ball when it comes to ticking off a few seconds on the stopwatch.

A refereeing legend, the Englishman Howard Webb (53), explained it in a program on the pay television channel ‘SkyBet’: the Premier League is planning a revolution in regulations that will greatly reduce delays in matches of goalkeepers. Under current rules, goalkeepers can only have the ball in their hands for six seconds. If this time is exceeded, an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team.

However, the time limit is exceeded and the whistle is rarely blown, which is why the Premier League is considering changing this rule. The new plan: if the goalkeeper holds the ball for more than eight seconds, the opposing team gets a corner. “In the Under-21 Premier League if the goalkeeper holds the ball for eight seconds and does not release it, there is a corner for the other team. After three seconds, the referee whistles a countdown and if the goalkeeper is stupid hold the ball, there’s a corner,” Webb said.

A change that English legend and television expert Gary Neville appreciated: “I like it, I think we all like it. The biggest delay in a match is because goalkeepers take more than six seconds with the ball. Goalkeepers keep the ball for nine, ten and sometimes up to 13 or 14 seconds; they lose six or seven extra seconds every time and the rule is still crazy.
