Infallible and accurate, Jorge Campillo the third round of Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters sharing the lead with the French Julien Guerrierby accumulating the same -19 in Royal Sotogrande Golf Club (Cádiz). The man from Cáceres managed to complete an amazing streak of 54 holes without a bogey and was appointed as the main Spanish option in penultimate test of the DP World Tour regular season.
Showcasing the weapons that allowed him to rise to first place on Friday, Campillo once again handled himself with ease and vigor on the Sotogrande route. However, the Spaniard ended up feeling that he had left a bit of a dent on the course by not converting the three chances he sought in the final matches, despite playing the ball well on the greens of these holes.
“It was a good round, the only thing is if I win four and I’m four under par, the normal win, but if there’s a -9… it’s difficult. It also happened to me in Malaysia that I went out first, I made four under and another made -10, something similar, but at least today is Saturday,” explained Campillo.
The large audience that will undoubtedly attend the decisive return to the beautiful design of Robert Trent Jones will have the Extremaduran as the main reference among the eleven Spaniards who made the cut.
“It’s very special to come out in the main game in Spain with everyone supporting you, on this field and in this season, but in the end you focus on what’s yours. I will try to play the same as today, always attacking, I like it, you don’t have to be stupid either, you have to make good decisions, but attacking is more fun,” concluded the Spaniard.
Jon Rahm (-12) remains in sixth place after threading a very tidy lap lacking very few details to make it a brilliant day. His error-free 68 with four birdies indicates stability, but some specific mistakes prevented him from fighting for the title that seemed more difficult.
“A -9 tomorrow won’t be enough to win, it won’t be windy and some of the leaders will do four or five less. I’ll start taking off and see if I can come back and scare them. Being quite smart, I have permission be as aggressive as I want,” explained the man from Barrika at the end of his lap.
“It’s important that the putt works. Yesterday I hit a couple long that made the difference of minus six. A lot of it didn’t fit, it was me being inconsistent with the strength and the line didn’t go well.”
In addition to Jorge Campillo and Jon Rahm, the other Navy members who made the cut had mixed results. In order of classification they include Eugenio Chacarra (-9); David Puig, Adrián Otaegui and Ángel Hidalgo (-8); Nacho Elvira (-5); Adri Arnaus and Álex del Rey (-3); and Pablo Larrazábal and Sebastián García (pair).
