Lugo added their third win in a row after defeating an Athletic B team that dominated the game but barely created any chances. The competitiveness and defensive solidity shown by the Galician team in recent days was once again demonstrated in the victory against the Bilbao reserve team.
Arambarri’s team controlled the ball from the opening minute, looking to nullify Lugo who seemed comfortable in the role of keeping lines together and doing damage on the counterattack. This certainly turned out to be the only goal of the match, as Raúl Hernández connected with a powerful shot from the edge of the area that, with the help of the rival goalkeeper, ended up in the back of the net.
From there the locals gave total control of the football to their rivals, who tried to create danger by exploiting Olabarrieta’s talent. Azkune had an option to equalize with a ball that leaked inside, but his shot was deflected into Marcos Lavín’s goal. Athletic continued to try until half-time, but Lugo’s defensive solidity nullified any dangerous options. The people of Lugo even warned of an increase in the difference through the linked counter between Jorge and Raúl Hernández.
The start of the second half did not change the script of the game. Lugo maintained the defensive framework as the Basque reserve team repeatedly collapsed against the local defence. Athletic became desperate, giving control of the ball to a Lugo with nerves of steel. Lolo Escobar’s men turned their backs on Gastesi’s goal despite minimizing the risks and Perero had the option to increase the lead with a shot that went into the hands of the Bilbao goalkeeper. In the final minutes of the clash, the Arambarri team returned to the charge, but the defensive unity of the locals once again stood as an insurmountable wall. With this victory, Lugo was able to put himself at the top of the standings.
