The coach of Triestine, Pep Clotetdefended himself after angrily confronting his player with a red card, Raimonds Krollis, in a Serie C match on Friday, saying the ‘shake’ he gave the player was justified given the nature of the matter. Krollis, who joined Triestina on loan from Serie A side Spezia in August, received a red card for a tackle on an opposing player in the 35th minute of a 1-0 defeat to Giana Erminio.
When the Latvian left the field to go to the shower, Clotet grabbed him by the neck and pushed him several times. “I think, regarding the red card incident, my reaction was reasonable: this kind of aggression should not happen in football,” Clotet told reporters after the match in the third division.
“Krollis is here on loan, representing another club that sent him here, and he is doing it in Triestina, with the club that entrusted him to us and the game itself,” said Clotet. “What went through my mind? I have an eight-year-old son who saw this today. I come from a culture where this type of behavior is not acceptable. If a player does something like this on the street, there will be legal consequences. This is not normal and we should not accept it in any way.”
Clotet, who previously coached Oxford United and Birmingham City, said Krollis would never play for the club again, adding: “I told him exactly this up front: that for me as manager, at the moment, it’s over. He won’t play with Triestina anymore”.
