The former president of the Turkish Süper Lig club Ankaragücü, Faruk Kocawas sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for assaulting a referee in 2023, state agency Anadolu reported on Monday. The reason was “intentional injuries” in a match against Rizespor club on December 11, which ultimately led to his resignation.
He was also sentenced to six months and twenty days, as well as a five-month suspended prison term, respectively, for “threatening” and “not complying with the law on the prevention of violence in sport.”
Mr Koca rushed referee Halil Umut Meler after the final whistle, violently punched him in the face and shouted “I’ll kill you!” While the two clubs were tied, the referee only disallowed Ankara’s goal. Two people also hit the referee, causing head trauma.
