Customs discovery in Dresden – live snakes smuggled in toy cars

Date:

At the airport in Leipzig, Germany, customs officials found live bats in a cargo package. The animals were hidden in toy car trailers, the main customs office in Dresden announced on Monday.

The shipment originated from Indonesia and was destined for a recipient in Great Britain. In total, customs officials found fourteen Pacific boas (photo below) and snail snakes in two toy trailers.

Indicated as pasta and toys
The sender had declared the freight shipment as pasta and two toy vehicles with trailers. However, when the package was checked last week, the X-rays led to suspicions that it may contain snakes.

One animal did not survive the transport
One of the toy trailers even contained nine small snakes, one of which did not survive the transport. Experts from the Senckenberg Institute Dresden identified them as snail snakes.

Another trailer contained five Pacific boas – these were young animals. All snakes were housed in the veterinary facility.
