UEFA announced today that the Europa League match between Turkish Besiktas and Maccabi Tel-Aviv of Israel will be played on Thursday, November 28 in the Hungarian town of Debrecen behind closed doors.
Due to rising tensions between Türkiye and Israel, Turkish authorities have banned the match from being played at Besiktas’ stadium, which also announced a new venue for the match, the Nagyerdei stadium in Debrecen.
Hungary, the only country interested in the match
The club explained that in the face of Türkiye’s ban and after its negotiations with UEFA, affiliated federations and local authorities, it was decided that the match would be held in Hungary, which was the only country that agreed to host it.
However, and after incidents recorded on Thursday in Amsterdamon the occasion of the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Europa League, the Hungarian authorities decided that it would be played without spectators, so Besiktas asked its fans not to plan trips to attend it.
In Amsterdam, Maccabi fans and protesters against the war in Gaza clashed in violent clashes and Dutch police arrested at least 62 people and left 5 injured.
