Glentoran loses appeal against Ireland Cup expulsion for fielding ineligible player

Date:

The Irish Appeals Board rejected Glentoran’s appeal against their expulsion from the Irish Cup in the Joe Crowe case.

As a result, New York City will face Baleman United in the semi-finals on April 13.

Glentoran sued after he was kicked out of the cup after Crowe was found ineligible to play in the quarter-final match in New York on March 5.

Crowe was disqualified for “outrageous insults” when he played for the Glentoran reserve team against Linfield Swift on February 14.

The reserve team played three matches before the 23-year-old won 1-0 in eight finals against Nouri, but one was an average cup match, and Crowe is not allowed to play.

According to the IFA Disciplinary Code, a player who is ineligible to participate in a particular match due to competition rules cannot use that match to qualify for disqualification.

Newry filed a complaint on March 7, then accepted the league club’s protest at the first hearing on March 10.

In a statement, the Irish Football Association explained that Glentoran’s latest appeal was made on four grounds and that the Appeals Board had all rejected.

The reasons for the appeal of the Oval Club were as follows:

  • That the Commission misrepresented itself in applying and/or interpreting the Intermediate Cup Rules.
  • The IFA Football Rules do not apply in general and Rule 27 does not apply specifically to the Intermediate Cup Rules.
  • The decision is inappropriate and in no way related to Glentoran’s comments on the COMET system.
  • The decision does not take into account the effect of the decision on Glentoran.

A statement from the Irish Football Association said the Appeals Board had “rejected all of Glentoran’s complaints”.

On the specific issue of Ireland’s FA COMET system, the Appeals Board has stated that the computerized platform is “in no way custodian of the player’s authority”.

The referee added: “Clubs cannot and should not use the COMET system as a scapegoat to make a decision on a player’s authority.”

A statement issued by the Irish Football Association read: “The decision refers to the decision of the Challenge Cup Committee to bring Nouri back into the competition – the Ballymina United semi-finals – in the stands.

Glentoran has not yet responded to the decision, but club members will meet on Friday afternoon to discuss possible additional measures.
