Initially, the researchers focused their activity on finding out where football matches were broadcast, following the steps of the extension’s source code. After various searches for information, they found the said site, one of the most used instant messaging platforms in Spain.

To identify the author of the events, the investigation focused on the ‘nicknames’ or pseudonyms that appear in the source code within the extension, where paid football content is broadcast, for free, in more than 78,000 people.

Finally, the investigations carried out made it possible to identify a specific user of the platform as responsible for the events. The operation concluded the investigation of a 37-year-old man for a crime related to the market and consumers and responsible for a fraud of 42,547,104 Euros. Blocking and removal of all instant messaging application channels through which matches were played was also achieved, as well as removal of programming code used illegitimately.
