The Spanish footballer Juan Mata will join MLS’s San Diego FC as a new investment partner, as announced Wednesday by the American club.
“Mata is the first active international soccer player to have an investment in an MLS franchise and join David Beckham as the second international player involved as an investor in an MLS club,” San Diego FC said in a statement.
San Diego FC is the new MLS team, it will start its MLS journey in 2025 and has the Mexican Hirving Lozano as a star of his team and with the American of Chilean descent Mikey Varas as a coach.
“Joining San Diego FC as an investment partner This is an exciting opportunity. to help build something truly special in a city and league that is experiencing incredible growth,” Mata said.
World and European champion with the Spanish team, Mata founded the Common Goal, an initiative for the football community to donate at least 1% of its revenue to social causes.

Common Goal is also a partner of Right to Dream, of which San Diego FC is a member and which is a group of youth academies and football clubs from around the world.

The 36-year-old Spaniard began his football career at the Real Madrid youth academy and rose to prominence for Valencia before jumping to the Premier League, where he played for Chelsea and Manchester United. His club record includes the Champions League in 2012 and the Europa League in 2013, both with Chelsea.
He later defended the shirts of Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe before landing this year with Australian Western Sydney Wanderers.
