Guillermo Coria quits captaining the Argentine Davis Cup team

Date:

After the recent elimination in the Davis Cup quarterfinals, Guillermo Coria quits being the coach of the Argentina teamas announced this Monday by the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT).

“After three years at the head of the Argentine YPF Tennis Team, Guillermo Coria left his position as captain this Monday. “This is a decision of common agreement based on a meeting between the former world No. 3 and the President of the Argentine Tennis Association, Agustín Calleri,” the institution reported in a statement.

“We are very grateful to Guillermo and his main collaborators, Leonardo Mayer and Martín Garcíafor these people leading the team. We consider that his work has gone from the minor to the greatest, bringing together a group of young players who will bring a lot of joy to Argentine tennis in the years to come. We wish you the greatest success and invite you to continue to work together for the development of our sport,” Calleri said in the announcement.

The text also expects that the AAT “It will be discussed in a short time who will be the next captain of the national team.”

Coria’s departure comes less than a week after the Argentine team that competed in the final stage of the Davis Cup in Malaga was eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing to Italy, who became champions on Sunday.

“They beat us well, they were fair winners, so I congratulate them, but we are up to the task, we fight and we are about to eliminate a power like Italy,” said the former tennis player in the press conference after the defeat of his doubles players Máximo González and Andrés Molteni against Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, which means the farewell of the Argentines in this world cup.

The ‘Wizard’, who closed his cycle with a record of five wins and six losses in the 11 series he played, took charge of the Argentine Davis Cup team at the end of 2021 with a two-year contract that was later extended by one more season.

Coria is also the captain of the Argentina team that competed – without winning medals – at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and also of the team that won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile.
