The Italian Edoardo Bove22 year old player Fiorentina who this Sunday lost consciousness during a Serie A match against Inter, collided minutes before he fell with Dutchman Denzel Dumfries and went to the bench to change his shirt, clearly affected.
The play in question, the blow to the body he suffered minutes before collapsing, may have been the reason he went into cardiorespiratory arrest minutes later at the Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence. There, on the bench, while wearing the new shirt, he commented that he was dizzy to the coaching staff, according to local media reports this Monday.
It all happened in just a few minutes. From the collision with Dumfries to his unconsciousness there were almost no plays. It was the 17th minute of the game when Inter scored a goal. Argentine Lautaro Martínez took advantage of a long pass from Dumfries himself and fired in to score the first goal of the duel. However, the referee disallowed the goal to check whether the ball had gone off the wing on Dumfries’ pass.
While some protested to validate the goal and others to nullify it, Bove bent over to try to recover from his stupor. At first it looked like he was tying his shoelaces, but a video on social media showed him trying to gain strength.
He stood up, as the game stopped, and took two steps before passing out in front of the Inter bench. Dumfries and Calhanoglu caught on quickly. Especially since they saw how their coach Simone Inzaghi rushed from the bench onto the field to help and slipped on the way.
Danilo Cataldi, a ‘Fiore’ player, tried to stop him from suffocating with his own tongue and, seconds later, medical help from both teams and from the stadium arrived to control the situation. There, the players and coaching staff formed a circle. Only a few ran out in search of an ambulance, eagerly demanding it enter the field.
According to protocol, the ambulance waited at the corner closest to the exit. All the necessary material is perfectly presented next to the affected person. After 5 minutes, when the first aid was finished, the car left for Careggia University Hospital in Florence. The match was immediately suspended, with the players’ faces expressing their concern and the Fiorentina crowd in tears.
The Artemio Franchi Stadium was silent, but no one moved. Fans are living another new nightmare. They recalled what happened with their captain, Davide Astori, in 2018, and, more recently, with their manager, Joe Barone. Neither case, although both related to heart attacks, occurred in rural areas.
The closest thing Italian football has experienced in recent times was in April, in the Udinese-Roma match where Ivorian Evan Ndicka also collapsed midway through the match. The center back left the field in better condition, although he was also taken to hospital.
He regained consciousness in the hospital
Bove arrived at the hospital and regained consciousness there. He was able to get out with the help of cardiorespiratory arrest assistance and spent the night in intensive care and under sedation, as reported by the club and medical center.
“Fiorentina and the Careggi University Hospital inform that the footballer Edoardo Bove, who was rescued on the field of play after losing consciousness during the Fiorentina-Inter match, is currently under pharmacological sedation and hospitalized in intensive care,” reported Fiorentina in a statement. “Bove arrived at the emergency room hemodynamically stable and the first cardiological and neurological tests performed ruled out severe damage to the central nervous system and the cardiorespiratory system. He will be re-evaluated in the next 24 hours,” he added.
A new combined medical bulletin will arrive throughout the day after the footballer was subjected to new tests. Serie A, for its part, will announce the date on which the remaining minutes of the suspended match will be played.
