Marc Guehiplayer of Crystal Palacecould face a ban from the FA for writing the phrase “I love Jesus” on the rainbow flag captain’s armband he wore this weekend. The Premier League is running an integration campaign called ‘Stonewall Rainbow Laces’ between November 29 and December 5, where, among other things, team captains are invited to wear an armband with rainbow flag
Guehi, captain of the Palace, wrote the phrase “I love Jesus” with a marker on the armband, which could lead to punishment from the English authorities because it is a religious message. “The kits cannot carry any political, religious message or a personal slogan,” the competition rules said.
This is the second controversy to arise from the campaign, after Sam Morsy, captain of Ipswich Town, refused to wear an armband citing his “religious beliefs”. The English club asserted its support for this campaign, but will confirm the decision of the Egyptian player, the only one of the twenty captains of the Premier League who did not wear the armband. This campaign has been run in the Premier League since 2013.
