Last Friday marked ten years since Iñaki Williams made his Athletic first team debut. A decade since that clash against Córdoba in San Mamés. The red and white lost 0-1 to the starting eleven where, in addition to the Bilbao striker, there were, among others, Laporte, De Marcos, Gurpegi and Muniain. That day Aduriz was absent and therefore the debut of what is now known as the oldest Williams.
Since then, Iñaki has played 441 matches spread over eleven seasons. He is, logically, one of the team captains. Because of seniority, common sense and specific weight inside the locker room itself.
Williams clarified last Friday in an interview with Aitor Martínez, DEIA journalist, that “Kuko Ziganda, who, so to speak, along with Ernesto (Valverde), became my sporting father. He is a forward, he has a lot of trust in me and he brought me to Bilbao Athletic even though there were forwards older than me, with more experience in the reserve team. He raised me and bet. “He was the first to start getting mad at me.”
Iñaki Williams, the one with the great contract and the record of continuity, has no bed of roses to establish himself as a lion. His career remains there. His majesty too.
