The former Brazilian international Lucas Leiva, 35, a Liverpool and Lazio player, returns to Gremio, the club which he formed. This was announced by Gremio himself on Monday, when it confirmed Luke’s signature. The midfielder came on free after ending his contract with Lazio at the end of last season and is ready to help Gremio return to the top category of Brazilian football.

“In 2002, a 15-year-old man entered our training center. He was already shining. Now he’s going home,” Gremio, who currently plays in the Brazilian Second Division, posted on Twitter.
Lucas Leiva, international for Brazil 22 times, signed for Gremio until December 2023. The attacking midfielder left the Brazilian team in 2007 to sign for Liverpool, where he won the English League Cup in 2012. His time at Liverpool was marked by the many injuries he sustained.
Lucas Leiva then signed for Lazio in 2017, where he won the Coppa Italia in 2019. He started in the final against Atalanta (2-0). He was a bronze medalist with Brazil at the Beijing Olympics 2008. Upon his return, Gremio hopes to take a step in quality to return to the top category after his relegation.
