New mega project – the city’s planned “export of the dead” disrupts the tranquility of the forest

Date:

Conservationists view peace as threatened as Vienna plans a new forest cemetery for the deceased on Lower Austria’s Bisamberg.

“I used to want to be buried under an old linden tree or some other giant. But since I know how much nature has to be sacrificed to create such a tree cemetery, there is no question for me,” activist Brigitte Etzelsdorfer said sadly, as if grieving the loss of a loved one.

‘City of Vienna must bury project’
Almost every day, the environmentalist wanders lost on the Elisabethhöhe and practically prays that the project of the city of Vienna will be buried after all: “Because in the approximately ten-hectare forest, owned by the nearby federal capital, the tranquility of the rare flora and fauna be disturbed.”

Etzelsdorfer has already extrapolated the number of urns buried: “It could be about 2500, maybe 3000 dead per year, after their cremation through ‘export of the dead’ to the still pristine Natura 2000 site – and then sleep in their urns forever. .”

‘We expect tens of thousands of car journeys soon’
The combative lady also fears that the peace of the dead will be disturbed by the access road: “The formerly lonely and untouched natural paradise can only be reached via a narrow road and then a gravel path. We expect tens of thousands of car journeys here later.”

What annoys her comrade in arms is the mayor of Bisamberg, Günter Trettenhahn (ÖVP): “The city of Vienna has not lost a word to our community about this mega project. We came upon it purely by accident.”

“I can’t lie at home”
Meanwhile, retired Elisabeth N. (78) from Penzing has a somewhat idiosyncratic will. After her death, she would like to be laid out at home. Unlike the other federal states, however, this is not possible in Vienna. “I just don’t understand and I think it’s a shame. Why hasn’t that changed?”
