the balearic James Munar became the first Spanish tennis player on Monday to advance to the second round of Wimbledon, after being convinced to beat the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in three sets, 6-2, 6-4 and 7-5, over 2 hours and nine minutes.
For Munar, number 71 in the ATP, the draw paired him with a rival a priori affordable and located below him on the circuit (89), and he didn’t miss the chance to advance to the round with a solid step.
In the third confrontation between the two, a victory so far, Munar insisted on his game from behind the court to keep the Brazilian, largely thanks to his stability in serving: he only gave one game to serve.
Superior in all aspects, Munar was only seen as questioning his success in the third set, where he again imposed his law both on his successful climb into the net and into the game from below.
In the second round, the Balearic are awaited by Cameron Norrie, winner of Spain’s Pablo Andújar.
