Fred Lorenzen died at the age of 89

Fred LorenzoNASCAR Hall of Famer and 1965 Daytona 500 champion, has died at age 89, NASCAR reported Wednesday.


Lorenzen, who? won 26 Cup racesis included in the list of 50 Greatest NASCAR Drivers of All Timen 1998. It also became first NASCAR driver to earn more than $100,000 in a season in 1963.

«Fred Lorenzen was one of NASCAR’s first superstars. A fan favorite, he helped NASCAR expand from its original roots,” said NASCAR President and CEO, Jim Francein a statement.

“For many years, NASCAR’s ‘Golden Boy’ is also its gold standarda fact that ultimately brought him to the top of the sport, a rightful place in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Lorenzen, called the “Elmhurst Express”, “Fast Freddie” and “Fearless Freddie” by his fans, lI have been battling dementia for yearsaccording to American media reports.
