Carlos Sainz Sr He is an example for every athlete. He maintains the same passion for her 62 years than when it debuted in the rallying world nearly half a century ago. In 2025 it will return to Dakar with the idea of achieving a fifth victory in the world’s toughest rally and becoming the first driver to win in five different brands. He has done it in Volkswagen, MINI, Peugeot and with Audi last year. Now he ventures to Ford beside Lucas Cruz again.
Despite that steel, no one knows if this is the last Dakar or not. No one knows because ‘Matador’ himself has no answer to the eternal question. He has a contract until 2026 with Ford, but that does not guarantee his continuation.
“At this point I have to go every year. This is a promise I made to myself. When I finish this Dakar, I will see if I have measured up, if I have been fast. TI have to look in the mirror, ask myself questions and depending on the answers I see if I continue or not.. I have a contract for 2026 but it doesn’t mean I will be 100%,” Sainz said at Ford’s presentation at the Red Bull offices in Madrid on Thursday.
Despite this, Sainz hopes to return to Ford in the final stages of his career. With the American brand, he debuted in the World Rally Championship in the 80s and won his first Spanish championship. Now to them it is clear: ““I want to be the first grandfather to win the Dakar.”he said between laughs.
“If I’m here it’s because I know what I want and how I want it. I have a method that works well for me at the moment and I feel strong,” he concluded.
