Frenchman François Letexier has been named the best referee in the world in 2024 by the IFFHS. Letexier, 35, was in charge of directing the final of the last European Championship between Spain and England and served as the fourth referee in the Wembley Champions League final between Real Madrid and Dortmund.
Letexier succeeds Szymon Marciniak in this recognition, declared the best referee in the world by the aforementioned institution in 2022 and 2023. No Spanish referee appears in the list of the 10 best referees of the year. In second place is Slovenian Slakvo Vincic and in third place is Italian Daniele Orsato.
This award, given annually since 1987, has never been awarded to a Spanish referee. The referee with the most awards is Pier-Luigi Collina, who won it on six consecutive occasions between 1998 and 2003.
