Mathieu van der Poel, injured in the ribs, has given up starting on Wednesday of GP Nys in Baalfifth round of the X20 cyclocross Trophy in Belgium, as announced by its Alpecin-Deceunink team.
The world champion is suffering “severe pain in the ribs”as a result of his crash into the pole during the cyclocross test in Loenhout on Friday.
“The discomfort has worsened in recent days”explained his team. After consulting with the medical team this morning, Mathieu made the difficult decision not to start today. “We will closely monitor his recovery to determine if he can participate in the Koksijde cross-country tomorrow (Friday, editor’s note).”
The cyclocross world champion won all five events in which he participated this season (Zonhoven, Mol, Gavere, Loenhout and Besançon).
His mastery of discipline makes him the great favorite for Liévin World Championshipat the beginning of February in France, where he aims to match the record of world titles (7) held by Belgian Eric De Vlaeminck.
