Japan’s Naomi Osaka and Denmark’s Clara Tauson meet in the final of the 250 tournament in Auckland after defeating Americans Alycia Parks (6-4 and 6-2) and Robin Montgomery (6-4 and 6-3 ), respectively.
Osaka, former world number one and four-time Grand Slam champion, took one hour and eleven minutes to eliminate Parks to exit her first final since she was runner-up in Miami in 2022, after losing by Iga Swiatek of Poland.
The Japanese tennis player, at the age of 27, after becoming a mother and overcoming her mental health problems, will be looking for her eighth title against a rival who will be looking for her third WTA title. The latter was won on September 19, 2021 in Luxembourg, when she defeated Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the final.
“I’m happy because I reached the final for the first time before the Australian Open,” Osaka said after their semifinal match.
Osaka, seeded number seven, and Tayson, number five, will face off this Sunday for the title in what will be the first match between the two players in their entire careers.
