Danik Hengeveld (Ceratizit-WNT) ran away solo to claim her most important UCI Women’s WorldTour victory in Aldinga. It is on first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under101.9 kilometers between Brighton and Aldinga in Australian lands.
At twenty-two years old, Hengeveld surprised the peloton with an attack fifty kilometers from the finish line. He has done it months after a serious accident at the Tour of Britain where he broke his jaw, collarbone and several ribs.
In his debut with his new team, he was able to celebrate the victory. “This is very different This is my first race after my accident last year and with a new team“Hengeveld said. “I lost my confidence then. But I was able to run like I was 18 years old. I thought I could run,” he explained in statements released by his team. “I struggled a lot, especially on the mental side. I was able to train and enjoy it. It’s hard to see if I still want to ride a bike and how it feels to ride with a team that believes in me. “It’s great,” he said.
Hengeveld took the stage victory with a 43-second gap over New Zealand’s Ally Wallston (FDJ-Suez). Kathrin Schweinberger of Human Powered Health took the podium, 45 seconds behind Hengeveld.
