Poor Liverpool are flying with Salah but also breaking defensive records

Date:

Liverpool are the strongest team in Europe which can be seen in the fact that they are the only ones to have achieved success in seven rounds of the Champions League. The ‘reds’ extended their impressive record of victories on Tuesday by beating Lille at Anfield (2-1) and securing mathematical qualification for the round of 16 of the competition with one final match remaining, which they will be played next Wednesday 29th January against PSV in Eindhoven.

Again the praise went to them Mohamed Salahwho opened the scoring against Lille with his 50th goal in Europe wearing a Liverpool shirt since his arrival at Anfield in 2017. No player has scored more goals in continental competitions in the entire history of the ‘red’ club.

Of those 50 goals, Salah has scored 45 in the Champions League. In the current edition he has 3 and in the total number of the season he reaches 22 (18 in the Premier League, where he is the leading scorer ahead of Erling Haaland, with 17).

From Pulisic (Milan) to Jonathan David (Lille)

But so much of Liverpool’s trajectory has also been based on the solidity of its defence, led by Virgil van Dijk. In fact, the goal was scored on Tuesday by Jonathan David which in Lille’s short-lived 1-1 draw at Anfield, was only the second the team had conceded Andre Slott in seven days of the Champions League.

The former player capable of beating the Reds’ goal was Christian Pulisic in the third minute of Milan-Liverpool (1-3) of the first day. Since then, in between Alisson Becker and Caoimhín Kelleher, In three games without the Brazilian due to injury, they kept clean sheets against Bologna (2-0), Leipzig (0-1), Bayer Leverkusen (4-0), Real Madrid (2-0) and Girona (0 -1).

All in all they passed 599 minutes between Pulisic’s away goal on September 19 and David’s on Tuesday in the 62nd minute.

An unbeaten streak that represents a new record in Liverpool’s history in European competitions. The former, from 572 minutesachieved this in the 2005-2006 season with Rafa Benítez as coach.
