Harris English shot a 66 (-6) on Friday to take the lead after three rounds at the Farmers Insurance Open held at Torrey Pines (San Diego).
A day after strong winds affected the tournament and delayed it, it was the English who put together a smooth and calm spin.
English, who is at -9 in the overall standings, birdied the last three holes on the South Course to take the lead Andrew Novak, who finished ahead with a bogey-free 66 and was just one shot away.
After holing a 20-foot birdie putt, Novak left the final green with a one-stroke lead until English overtook him. He is chasing his first victory on the PGA Tour.
South African Aldrich Potgieter is third with 7 under par after scoring 67 strokes. The 20-year-old rookie played the final eight holes in 5-under par, helped by an eagle on the par-4 12th from nearly 173 yards down the fairway.
Joel Dahmen (70) joins South Korean KH Lee (68), German Matti Schmid (68) and second round co-leader Lanto Griffin (73) in fourth place at -5.
