Ruth Beitia will receive next Monday, July 11, at the Spanish Olympic Committee headquarters, the high jump bronze medal of the London 2012 Games.awarded to her nine years later, in 2021, after the disqualification of Russian Svetlana Shkolina.
The former Cantabrian athlete she was initially fourth in the high jump final won by Anna Chicherova of Russia -also allowed for doping in Beijing 2008 and Berlin 2009- with 2.05 meters, followed by American Brigetta Barrett with 2.03 and Shkolina with the same mark.
Four years after that date in London the so-called ‘McLaren report’, a World Anti-Doping Agency investigation, found conducted by Professor of Law Richard McLaren.
That investigation reflects a Russia organized doping plot hiding positives between 2011 and 2015, which could benefit Shkolina in the sport.
After related allegations, due to World Athletics sanctions, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made official on November 13, 2021 the change of classification in the high jump final of the London 2012 Olympic Games after the doping of Russian Svetlana Shkolina. That decision benefited Ruth Beitia, who finished third out of fourth.
The former Cantabrian athlete has an extensive list of winners that includes gold (Rio de Janeiro 2016) and an Olympic bronze (London 2012), a silver at an outdoor World Cup (Moscow 2013)two silver and two bronze at the indoor World Championships, three gold at the outdoor Europeans and another six medals at the indoor Europeans.
