Nadal: ‘I thought I couldn’t finish the game against Fritz’

Date:

“There’s something in the gut that isn’t working and I’ve had to change the service mechanics to make it less aggressive,” the Balearics admitted after his heroic advance to the semi-finals

After the feat of persevering and winning in five sets against American Taylor Fritz despite a muscle problem in the abdominal area, Rafa Nadal was delighted to be able to return to the Wimbledon semi-finals for the eighth time. The Balearics overcame his rival and an issue that, as the Balearics acknowledged, has haunted him since the start of the tournament.

“I don’t know how I won. I really enjoy playing these games in front of this crowd. It was a tough afternoon against a great player and all credit to Taylor who played well all year. It wasn’t an easy one at all game and I’m happy to be in the semi-finals,” Nadal analyzed at the foot of the field.

He was asked about his physical problems, to the point that his father told him to stop midway through the second set. “The body is okay, but in the gut there’s something that isn’t working and I’ve had to change the mechanics of the serve to make it less aggressive. I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish the game, but the energy on the pitch helped me, so thank you all for that.”

It’s now been 14 years since the mythical 2008 final he won against Swiss Roger Federer and Nadal confesses he didn’t think he could play at Wimbledon in 2022. And even less to be in the semi-finals again.

He was referring to Australian Nick Kyrgios, his last rival on his way to the final. “I hope I’m ready to play against him. He’s a great player on all surfaces, but especially on grass and I have to be 100 percent to have options.
