German Maximilian Schachmann (Soudal Quick Step), the first leader of Itzulia after his success in the individual counterreloj, did not expect to release the yellow jersey against Crono specialists, but eventually he could celebrate a victory after nearly two years of drought.
“I didn’t expect it. I knew I could do it well and I thought to win, but in front of Chrono specialists it was difficult. I didn’t win for two years, I was so happy to feel the feeling again. I won 3 stages in 2019, it was a special success,” said the German Cyclist.
Schachmann (Berlin, 31 years old), won four stages in Itzulia and one in turn and won twice from Paris Nice, who captured Vitoria with her professional success number 15.
“We will have many opportunities within a week, and if I come with legs in the final stage we will see what I can wish for,” German said.
Schachmann acknowledged the idea of getting out of the first study “all teams” of the scope that could have wind.
“Everyone was studying the wind, and starting soon it was a small advantage. I left the first goal. I received no advice from Mikel Landa, though he came from it,” he concluded.
