Rooney could return to the United States as a coach

Date:

Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney may return to American soccer but this time as manager. DC United, a Washington team where he already played between 2018 and 2019, has contacted him and his representatives to have him take over his bench.

As ESPN reported, Rooney is “open” to the possibility of returning to Washington, though he is currently enjoying vacations with his family before deciding on the next move in his teaching career.

Following his stint at DC United, Rooney returned to England in 2020 and hung up his boots on the ranks at Derby County, where he first combined player and manager roles.

Rooney left Derby County in June

In June Rooney resigned from his duties as manager after failing to prevent Derby County’s relegation to League One (English Third Division) as a result of losing points as punishment for financial problems.

DC United parted ways with coach Hernán Losada in April and Chad Ashton, his assistant, took over as caretaker.

After beating 7-0 on Friday against Philadelphia Union, the Washington team sits in 13th place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
