The French William Martin (Cofidis) became the third cyclist to withdraw from the Tour de France after a triple positive test for the Covid-19, as his team announced an hour before the start of the ninth stage in Aigle (Switzerland).
Martin was the best French cyclist on the last Tour, finishing in eighth place, and 14th overall.
“It’s a huge disappointment, I can do it well,” said Cédric Vasseur, Cofidis team manager.
The rider tested positive twice with the team doctor on Saturday, before the emergency test this Sunday morning of the mobile unit of ASO, the organization of the Tour de France. This last test confirmed his positivity. The other riders on the team, as well as the entire staff, were also tested and all returned negative.
The Cofidis team leadership explained that the new mandatory test will be conducted after the rest day on Monday for its entire squad.
He is the third rider to stop the race because of Covid, after French Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën) and Norwegian Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE), one of the domestique of yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar.
