Rory McIlroy this Thursday he wants to start with St Andrews British Open. With a birdie on the final hole, the Northern Irishman debuted with 66 and two strokes behind the rookie Cameron Young.
McIlroy, after being the leader on the first day of the PGA Championship, and just one shot from the head at the US Open, in both majors, “killed” him by the third round. This time he made sure he felt he was in control of his game and that gave him a lot of confidence.
On Thursday he was a happy man after starting his journey of chasing his second British with a good first round that included seven birdies and a bogey.
The world number two had four birdies in the front nine and two more around his lone bogey at 13, before nearly sinking a long eagle putt into the final green to end two shots from the lead.
“A fantastic start. This is what you expect to happen when you start the week. I did everything you had to do in Saint Andrews,” the 2014 British champion said in the press room.
Rory has posted two wins this season, as well as finishing second in the Masters and tied for 5th at the US Open, one of his best in a row since winning all four of his majors between 2011 at 2014.
“Overall, very happy. It’s another good start at a major. It’s three in a row for me now. I came in here playing well, and I’ve played this course well over the years. So I know if I’ll get out there to compete and stick to my game plan, that’s something that’s possible, ”Rory said.
“Everything seems to be fine. There’s really no problem with my game. Everything is fine, let’s go,” added the 33-year-old Briton, who seems to have adopted a more cautious attitude depending on how the game is played. . “I think it’s just accepting it sometimes and not being too aggressive, even if you put yourself in some of these positions,” he said.
McIlroy knows that a good start is no guarantee of success in his quest to win the fifth major he is looking for. “I have to come out tomorrow and confirm what I did today. This is the hardest Open I’ve played. My forte hasn’t been hard in recent years, but I hope to make it my forte this week,” he concluded.
