Regional swimming bets high

National chip shop. The swimmers of the region are noted in Jaén, in a Spanish championship from which they come out with a wealth of medals and three best national points

In recent months it has been possible to find out how the athletes of the region have become known in different modalities. A presence that is preceded by the good preparation of the Murcian coaches, who have put the name Murcia at the top in sports such as tennis or motorcycling. Tennis player Carlos Alcaraz and motorcycle racer Pedro Acosta are two good examples. They have opened a path for other athletes in the region to follow.

The region’s swimmers have hit the tables in the Spanish Junior Championship this past weekend. It is a sport that has not given excessive joy, but last weekend they took a step forward in the Spanish Junior Championship held in Jaén, from where they have returned with a wealth of medals and several best national records.

Swimmers from five clubs in the region jumped into the pool: CN Murcia San Jorge, CD Santa Ana, CN San Javier-Mar Menor, CN Águilas and CN UPCT Cartagonova Cartagena, all teams more than recognized nationally, especially in this type of championship for lower categories in which the best promises of Spanish swimming come together to measure strength.

They stood out, alongside other swimmers, Adrián Amo, of the Murcia San Jorge Swimming Club, who was the one to hang the most medals: four golds. He also received two best national marks. Olga Amo, from the same club, also had a remarkable performance. He took three gold medals and one silver, as well as a better national mark, most notably in the 400 free test.

Gala Jódar, from the Águilas Swimming Club, was one of the swimmers from the region who put in an outstanding performance. He won a silver and a bronze medal. Columbines Víctor and Ángel López, Irene Ayuso, from CD Santa Ana, and Lucía Villabañz, from San Javier also took the podium.

At team level, the 4×200 free relay of the San Javier-Mar Menor Swimming Club finished in a creditable third place. It consisted of Raúl Bezares, Salvados Sánchez, Hugo Sánchez and Raúl Buendía.

This success of the basic swimmers has even more merit as, as has been denounced more than once, the region lacks an approved and heated 50m pool to work in the best conditions.

The various clubs in the Murcia region, even if victorious of the Spanish Junior Swimming Championship, emphasize that it is crucial that these great swimmers can prepare themselves all year round in heated 50-meter pools.

Those from that distance cannot be used in winter, because they do not meet the conditions. This lack of facilities has forced several swimmers in the region to sign up with clubs outside the region to prepare in the best conditions and year-round in approved pools.

Diego Mira, who now belongs to UCAM, had to go to Club Natación Sabadell to complete his training. The same happens with the Cartagena Olympian Alberto Martínez, who belongs to the CN Cartagena, but trains in Barcelona.
