Shakhtar Donetsk has sued FIFA in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne and claimed 50 million euros for damages for failing to conduct certain transfer operations.
On June 21, FIFA ruled that foreign players from Ukrainian clubs could suspend their contracts after the invasion of Russia until June 30, 2023 unless they reached an agreement with their club before June 30, that is, 10 days. only after the FIFA decision.
“We had to do this because of FIFA’s unfair decision,” Shakhtar Donetsk chief executive Sergei Palkin told BBC Sport. “The collapse means we will continue to lose huge profits from deals we expect to close.”
Cruel criticism of FIFA
Palkin expressed his disagreement with FIFA. “We would also like to highlight that due to the situation faced by Ukrainian clubs in the war, FIFA has shown little respect for these clubs,” the leader lamented.
“FIFA has not sought to protect clubs and not once have they consulted with us to find a solution; they seem to have ignored the dangerous state facing football clubs in Ukraine since the beginning of the war.”
Four failed transfers
Shakhtar argued that they missed the chance to transfer approximately € 50m four players to leave the club after their contracts were suspended as a result of FIFA’s decision.
This is the case of midfielders Manor Solomon and Mateus Cardoso Lemos Martins, who stopped their moves to Fulham and Lyon.
“The four foreign players immediately withdrew from further negotiations regarding their possible transfers,” Palkin said in his letter to CAS.
“The players’ agents advised them to leave the negotiations to leave the club without any compensation, which would allow them to get more lucrative deals with new employers.”
sell to raise funds
Shakhtar have 14 foreign players in their squad and intend to sell some of them to raise funds to cover its revenue loss.
“In the absence of reaction from FIFA, we have no choice but to seek compensation for damages from the competent courts,” Palkin concluded.
