The American Michael Norman finally realized its potential by winning the 400m gold medal at the Eugene World Championships in Athletics (USA) in a close race where the male from Granada Kirani James got the silver.
James, 29 years old and world champion 11 years ago in Daegu (South Korea), dominated the race until the exit of the final corner.
But in the last 50 meters, with the support of the American public, norman24 years old and Olympic champion in Tokyo in the 4×400 relay, passed James and winner.
norman cross the finish line with a time of 44.29 seconds while Jamesa three-time Olympic medalist, had to settle down 44.48.
For years, Norman, a two-time champion in the United States, was considered the next great American distance star. But so far that potential has not materialized.
The American was the favorite to take victory first in Doha in 2019 and then in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but both times Norman failed to overcome the pressure.
The bronze was awarded to the British Matthew Hudson-Smithwith the 44.66. The British also managed to get on the podium thanks to his power in the final meters which allowed him to leave South Africa behind Wayde Van Niekerkwho did a time of 44.97.
Van Niekerk, 30, who holds the world record for the distance with a time of 43.03, came close to wresting bronze from Hudson-Smith but the Briton was able to hold off an onslaught launched by the South African in the second half of the race.
