the American Bernarda Pera was awarded this Saturday by the women’s tournament of hamburg by defeating the Estonian in the final Annette Kontaveitfirst seeded, 6-2 and 6-4 in one hour and 15 minutes.
Pera, 27 years old and world number 81, sprung a surprise by defeating Kontaveit (2nd) in her second meeting with her and managed to shake off the sting of her recent defeat against the Estonian at Wimbledon.
The American broke his rival’s serve in the first game and although the Estonian leveled the scoring with a loveless game in the fifth (2-3) he was unable to get any closer in the first half hour of the match.
The second set was more even, although Pera did not take advantage of a 2-5 lead after breaking the Estonian’s serve twice. Kontaveit got to 4-5 but in the final game the American was unforgiving and was sentenced to her first match point after 44 minutes.
The victory in Hamburg marked the American’s second straight career title, after debuting her WTA record last weekend at Budapest. Pera now has 12 straight wins since the preliminary phase of the Hungarian tournament.
