Five days after finishing second in the 1,500 meters, the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay was crowned world champion in the 5,000 with a period of 14:46.29beat the Kenyan in the sprint Beatrice Chebet (14:46.75) and another Ethiopian, Dawit Seyaum (14:47.36), who benefited from the effort made by his compatriots, taking turns throughout the race.
The Ethiopian too Letesenbet Gideyworld record holder of the 5,000, 10,000 and half marathons, aiming for a world double here after winning the 10,000 meters, came fifth at the finish line with 14:47.98, just ahead of another favourite, the Dutch sifa hassan (14:48.12), double Olympic champion in Tokyo, who was fourth here in the 10,000.
Gidey had a new podium appointment in the 5,000 final at the head of a powerful Ethiopian trio completed by Tsegay and Dawit Seyaum, who dominated the world list for the year.
The absence of the 2019 Doha world champion, the Kenyan Helen Obiriwho preferred 10,000 meters, left all responsibility to the Ethiopians.
Seyaum led the pack by shooting to impose a slow pace and before the first km the other two Ethiopians fell off the line with him, but Tsegay encouraged the march before covering the first km in 3:14.20. Gidey gave him relief and for the second km he passed in 2:53.38. The formerly compact group lined up. that Sifan Hassan is still in the last positions.
With the Kenyans agreeing, Gidey and Tsegay set the tone in the lead. Hassan was ahead at the bell, but lacked the freshness of his best time on the final lap.
Gidey broke the world record in October 2020 in Valencia with a time of 14:06.62.
