Pato O’Ward wins Iowa, Newgarden crash and 13th Palou

Date:

Duck O’Ward was imposed this Sunday on Iowa in Second race of the weekend in IndyCaradded his second victory of the season, and made a significant jump in the standings, taking advantage of an accident involving a Joseph Newgarden who then dominated the trial by force. Alex Paloumeanwhile, is thirteenth and moving away from the title.

O’Ward He always fights and is very much a protagonist with Josef Newgarden and Will Power. The Mexican wouldn’t have done it if he hadn’t made a fantastic start, where he went from seventh to fourth place, until eventually moving up to third, a position he would hardly leave within 300 laps of the track .

The other key to understanding the success of the royal pilot is the accidentally suffered by one Josef Newgarden who led the trial with great force. After the Nashville driver’s abandonment, O’Ward took the lead and would not relinquish the remaining seventy laps.

O’Ward couldn’t hide his smile as he greeted reporters after getting out of his car and gave credit to the entire team. “The people in the pits are amazing, I know we have the speed but then you have to do it in traffic as well. I’m very happy, we know there’s a great car and they did a great job. It’s been a great weekend,” he said.

The Arrow McLaren team and O’Ward himself set a goal for this weekend to cut points at the head of the classification, and they achieved it with second place on Saturday and victory on Sunday, the Mexican is approaching Ericsson in general and only 36 points.

The Pato O’Ward won four victories in IndyCar all catering to different layouts: Texas is a large oval, Detroit a street race, Alabama a speedway, and the latter a short oval. In addition, three of those four victories have come in ‘double header races’, always winning on Sunday.

One of the major moments of the race was the accident involved Joseph Newgarden, apparently due to suspension failure on his left front wheel, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and crash violently into the wall. He was then leading very strongly, and was aiming for a second straight win at his favorite circuit, but was forced to retire.

“I want to cry”, Newgarden said as he got out of his car and found it destroyed. “I am sad, very sad for my team, I was having a great race. It was not my fault, I felt a vibration, something unexpected. That is racing and it does not change that Team Penske is the best team, we did won’t stop fighting, I’m sure we’ll be fine,” he said.

Along with Will Power, both gave an exhibition of driving and competitiveness for the first position in the three quarters of the race, with moments of great tension at the pit exits and situations of both cars matching at full throttle to try win the initiative.

Having achieved success, Joseph Newgarden will be the new leader of the championship unseating Marcus Ericsonbut he left Iowa 34 points behind the Swede and there is doubt as to whether or not he will be able to drive at the next test, the Gallagher GP at Indianapolis on July 30.

If he is diagnosed with a concussion, he cannot return to a single-seater until seven days after the accident.

Marcus Ericson He didn’t get the results he was hoping for in Iowa, eighth on Saturday and sixth on Sunday, but the Swede managed to stay ahead of the drivers’ standings, seeing how the fight for the title is getting tighter.

In the final laps he got the instinct to try to stay at the top and fought for third position without success Scott McLaughlin, Scott Dixon and Jimmie Johnson; third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The weekend was not good Alex Palouwhich closes Sunday’s race as thirteenth and the chance to return to the top looks to have vanished and recover last year’s sensations. These became two discrete positions that led him to lose positions and points in the drivers’ championship, now sixth, 44 units behind the leader.

This second race started badly for the Catalan, constantly losing positions, and very far from the first positions. The yellow flags allowed him to get closer but he didn’t see the reaction like on Saturday, with no options to finish in the top ten.
