Australian Nick Kyrgios withdrew from ATP Atlanta with a left knee problem ahead of his first match since finishing runner-up at Wimbledon this month.
The 27-year-old was due to face Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in the first round of this ATP 250, but spoke publicly after his withdrawal.
“First of all, I just want to say that I’m so devastated that I can’t compete tonight,” said Kyrgios, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final three weeks ago.
“I’ve won this tournament once and I’m playing probably the best tennis of my career. All I want to do is come here and put on a show but it’s not possible,” added the Aussie.
“I’m very sorry, but maybe I can continue in doubles with Thanasi (Kokkinakis) this week,” he concluded.
Kyrgios, who won the Australian Open doubles this year with compatriot Kokkinakis, is into the doubles quarterfinals in Atlanta.
The World No. 47 received a wildcard into next month’s Western & Southern Open, the Cincinnati, Ohio Masters 1000, which begins two weeks before the US Open in New York on August 29.
