For Love III, captain of the Presidents of the USA, "the Super League is a distraction"

Date:

The selection of players to complete the list of Presidents Cup Golf is always a challenge for team captains.

This year, the task has become more difficult, because some players have disappeared PGA Tourr al LIV Golf (Super League with the capital of Saudi Arabia).

The The United States captain, Davis Love IIIaddressed his awkward position at a news conference before the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

“It’s a distraction,” Love said. “I was on a radio show the other day and the guys were like, ‘What do you think of Talor Gooch? I think he may or may not get drafted,’ I said, ‘He’s not eligible, ‘ and there was silence. I know he’s on the roster, but he’s not eligible to play. So yeah, it’s tough.”

The Presidents Cup (team USA vs. one non-European international player) is scheduled for September 22-25 at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

Love said the task of selecting players would be more difficult for his counterpart, South African international team captain Trevor Immelman, than for him. However, the American team will not have such worthy potentials Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, and Phil Mickelson.

“I will have players like (Max) Homa and (Will) Zalatoris who is excited about the possibility of being part of the team. Homa is a new player who will really bring energy to the team. And there’s a lot more in that boat, but Max is at the front and that’s what we need.”

Love looks forward to playing Zalatori the next two days in Detroit. “He’s a pretty confident, happy guy, but now I know I don’t have to worry about Will and I being together,” Love said. “He knows who I am, I know who he is and that relationship, that captain-player relationship, you know, he’s got my phone number. I just need to do it with a couple more guys.”

The United States has won 11 of the 13 editions of the Presidents Cup and tied the other. He is riding an eight-game winning streak in the series, including the most recent edition in 2019 in Melbourne, Australia. This year’s Presidents Cup matches have been postponed from 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
