On the occasion of the 108th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner warned of armed conflict. “The lesson of World War I is that war should not be used as a political tool. And this lesson is especially relevant against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine,” said the two ÖVP politicians.
Karner and Tanner describe the First World War, which began on July 28, 1914, as the “primordial catastrophe of the 20th century” with more than ten million victims, who, however, “for the most part disappeared from the collective memory of Austria”. “Only the countless war graves are a stony memory for us,” said Karner, the minister responsible for war graves.
Prevent memories from fading
According to the broadcast, since 1920 the Austrian Armed Forces, together with the Austrian Black Cross, have been helping to take care of the war graves and memorials to the fallen and war victims “to prevent the memories of the fundamental idea ‘No more war’ and the terrible atrocities”.
Accordingly, joint renovation works are currently being carried out on Group 91 in the Vienna Central Cemetery. About 23,000 victims of various war theaters of the First World War are buried in Vienna’s central cemetery.
